One of the most common questions we hear at Bells NSS is: "What does NDIS community nursing cover?" It's a fair question, especially when you're trying to understand if your health needs qualify for this valuable support. The answer isn't always straightforward, but we're here to break it down for you.
Understanding what's included, and what's not, can help you plan effectively and ensure you're getting all the support you're entitled to receive.
What NDIS Community Nursing Includes
NDIS community nursing covers disability-related health supports that require the skills of a registered or enrolled nurse. What does NDIS community nursing cover specifically? Here are the key inclusions:
Clinical Care Services
Wound assessment, catheter care, medication management, and monitoring of chronic health conditions.
Complex Personal Care
PEG feeding management, tracheostomy care, injections, and bowel care programs.
Health Monitoring
Vital signs checks, health assessments, training support workers, and coordination with other providers.
What NDIS Community Nursing Does NOT Cover
The NDIS won't fund services that should be provided by the mainstream health system, including hospital-in-the-home programs for acute illness, short-term post-surgical nursing (typically covered for first 2 weeks), emergency medical care, GP consultations, or medications and medical supplies.
Also excluded are health needs not related to your disability, nursing care that informal supports (family) can reasonably provide, and services already funded under aged care packages if you're receiving both.
Getting the Coverage You Need
Knowing what NDIS community nursing cover empowers you to advocate for the support you need. The key is demonstrating that your nursing needs are ongoing, related to your disability, and can't be met by mainstream health services alone.
